Facing an unplanned pregnancy is scary and it’s especially scary if you are single, broke and unsure if you have the resources to provide for your child. Rest easy little mama. Read the poem below by Teresa McIntosh-Hall and you’ll soon learn that when life hands you lemons…you CAN make lemonade!
I hear your heart’s gentle beat
And the doctor grins
as I start to cry.
And for the first time, in a long time,
It isn’t for me
but for the way your rhythm
makes me feel.
He tells me “it’s your hormones”
but it feels more like the touch of God
tuning up my soul for your arrival.
And while I used to call you an “accident”
Now I call you a blessing.
Modern technology brings your movements to life
And you raise your arms above your head to stretch
But I am almost certain that you waved to me.
I feel you flutter after I eat
And you like to kick right before I head to bed.
I spend nearly every night with my hand on my belly
waiting for the dance.
You take my breath away…literally.
But that’s okay….
I am learning to slow down and breathe for the both of us.
And what is it about lemons that you like so much?
You have me craving them day and night.
Yes, I think I’ll grow a lemon tree….
So when you are older and wiser you can laugh and say…
“life gave my mom lemons but she made lemonade.”
